Process Leading to Be Able to Play a Guitar Solo?

What a great play lead guitar question:

Question: hi, i have seen some guitarist playing a solo after listening to a song. how do they do that? also can u give me a list of what steps i should take before learning a guitar solo? thanks
also, how do u know which strings to play on the fretboard without looking at a tablature?
Answer: Question 1:
Some guitarists that can play a solo after listening to a song have perfect pitch (they can distinguish a note as easily as you can distinguish a color.) Other that can do that have played and practiced a lot and they recognize patterns they hear in the solo as things that they played in practice, exercises or other solos that they know.

Question 2:
To learn a solo do as the other answerer said and learn it it pieces, slowly and in the correct rhythm. You may be surprised a how few pieces it takes to put the solo together sometimes. When you get up to speed, play along with the CD or MP3 or YouTube video, whatever. But play along with it to capture the correct feel and nuances. Don’t be happy just hitting the correct notes, listen carefully to the original solo as you play along.

Question 3:
On a piano for example, The C above Middle C note is always played by pressing one specific key on the piano. There is no other key for it.

On the guitar you can play that note on

String2/Fret 1 or
String3/Fret 5 or
String4/fret 10 or
String 5/Fret 15 or
String6/Fret 20

If you recognize that note by ear in a solo, which one do you play? One clue is the ‘timbre’ or sound quality of the note – the one on string 2 will sound crisp and clear and the one on string 6 will sound a bit muffled. Another clue is the the other notes in the solo. You have to find the area of the guitar neck where all these notes are in the ‘neighborhood.’ You may find that after studying guitar and learning scales and modes, that you will be able to find the area of the neck where the original guitarist thought up the riff and what mode or scale he hand in mind when he did it.

Hope this helps.

1 go to a computer, if you are reading this you probably are already at one
    2 go to ultimate-guitar.com
3 type in the name of a song you want to play
    4 learn the song

I’m not sure if you mean are able copy the solo or if theycan solo to the song with their own solo.
Either way it takes a thorough knowledge of guitar scales in all Keys.
major scale, minor, pentatonic, blues …
there are many different scales according the the key the song is in.
If you are experienced and have a good ear and know the tricks of doing what the other guitarist is doing..(ie, sweep picking hammer ons, tapping, whatever…) it’s fairly easy to copy what they were doing.
But it takes a long time to get that good. After about 4 or 5 years of playing electric guitar and 4 years of acoustic before that, I was able to copy many guitar solos by ear…sometimes it takes a few tries to get right, but it’s very similar to learning a song itself by ear.

BTW Ignore that first answer. That dude has no clue in the world.
TABS do not teach you how to play by ear.

    go to
    http://www.all-guitar-chords.com/

they have maps of all the scales you’ll need.

Well, when u find the tabs of the song you want to learn, find the solo part. Be sure to learn it in little chunks, don’t try to memorize the whole thing at one time cause then you’ll forget how to play it later on. Depends on how the long the solo is too. Play it slowly but in the right rhythm as well
