Need to Learn How to Play Lead Guitar. I'm a Decent Rhtyhm Guitarist and Have Been for Some Years But!?

This week’s question is a good one. Let’s have a look:

Question: my lead sucks.
Where do I start?
Links would be good.
Answer: Start with riffs built round chord shapes. Classic examples are Chuck Berry’s intro to Johnny B Goode. The intro to Greased Lightning, stuff like that.
If you want to play like single string melody lines, you can find tabs for a lot of stuff on the net.

I grew up with The Shadows, an instrumental group from the sixties – Hank Marvin lead guitar – so his work might give you some idea.

Hope this helps

HIRE A GUITAR TEACHER for a start.

How well can you READ MUSIC
How well can you play PENTATONIC SCALSE
How well can you do FINGER PICKING

If you answered ANY of those questions with "Not to well" then YOU ARE NOT READY TO PLAY LEAD GUITAR.

You need to start learning some scales and you want to be able to play them up and down as well as across. The next step is to work on playing faster and cleaner. One thing that can help you play clean is to use the neck pickup.

While Barco there may be being a bit hard on you… he’s right.

When you can blaze through scales (pentatonics being the most common fallbacks) you’re ready to start gunning for the lead spot.

As lame as it is, drill the $hit out of your scale exercises. A teacher will have list and list of skill drills to help you get the most out of your scale practice. There is no shame in taking a few lessons.

You should be able to apply phrasings in the correct scales for the key you’re in on a dime if you REALLY want to be considered a lead player.

But you know what? YOU CAN DO IT.

look here http://www.all-guitar-chords.com learn pentatonic minor first. learn all 5 patterns. next learn pentatonic major. and by doing so realize that all your doing is changing the root note location in the scale pattern. now after you grasp that. learn the aeolian mode. and all your doing is adding notes to the 5 tone scale you already learned. after you learn even some of that you will be able to play lead better.
