Why is My Lead Guitar Playing So Bad when Im Good at Playing Fast Rhythm ?

This week’s question is as follows:

Question: even though i can play intro to songs like hourglass by lamb of god , master of puppets (with downpicking) with barely any practice as i wanted to test my skill at it. also unholy confessions, beast and the harlot rhythm, nightmare rhythm plus lead not the solo by a7x. add in any blink 182 song, nofx, or any of the punk bands like them. but i am terrible at playing solos or lead parts especially the ones that are fast and change strings a lot. for example, yesterday i sat down to learn stairway to heaven solo which i heard is really easy and it took me a long time to even get the firrt 10-20 secs of it. the notes are on various strings as you would know ?? also if i dont look at the strings while playing lead, i miss hitting the strings . PLEASE HELP

P.S. i have been playing for about 16-17 months

Answer: You have 2 hands. Your picking hand is probably developing faster than your fretting hand, in terms of moving around the fretboard. You should prolly practice with a metronome to develop better timing, and if you haven’t already, learn your scales.

Just as a baby must crawl before walking so is the fledgling guitarist required to go a step at a time through chords, their progressions, some music theory, and a few years of experience before moving into the realm of a lead guitarist.

Learn the basics first–then consider playing lead solos. It takes years to properly perform as a lead guitarist.

    Hey!

    I have the same problem.
I found it’s easy to learn the rhythm and intros to songs because you know exactly what the note is going to be. (most identifiable guitar lines) so once you learn what notes are coming up, the lead guitar playing comes a lot smoother.

    Practice makes perfect!

probably not learning much music theory, scales , modes, chord construction and inversions, i recommend downloading the ebook from http://guitarmanual.typepad.com if you want to learn those things in an easy way and quickly
