What Is The Difference Between Lead/Rhythm Guitar?

What a great lead guitar question:

Question: If you know the band – "Arctic Monkeys"
Is Jamie Cook Rhythm Guitar Or Lead?
But I am sure Alex Turner is lead, as he doe’s the solo’s.

What are all of the differences between the two?

Thanks.

Answer: Rhythm means strumming and playing the chords, Lead means picking and performing the Guitar solos.

  1. Shadow says:

    Rhythm guitar plays the chords
Lead guitar does the rifts, solo’s etc

  2. Another Number says:

Rhythm guitarists usually just play solid chord patterns throughout a song, whereas lead guitarists play the solos and "layer" picked melodies/riffs over the rhythm guitarists sound.

Some bands have members that stick to that role always, and will be clearly labelled "rhythm" and "lead". Others will switch around roles depending on the song/vocals. I think the Arctics are more like the latter…I used to get confused about them too.

Rhythm keeps rhythm. Lead does not carry much weight in the rhythm. Lead will play "in tempo" or in time, but it does not create the overall rhythm of the song.
