Answer: close — AUTO wah and distortion. i remember reading many years ago in an interview in guitar world or something that kirk hammett used an auto wah on this particular song, and that is how he got that "scoop" sound that happens more quickly and mechanically than a regular wah pedal. i couldn’t find any references to the interview online, so we will just have to trust my memory on this one!
