What Are Some Good Scales to Know for Metal Lead Guitar?
Another lead guitar question has come in this week. Let’s tackle it straight away:
Question: I’ve been playing for a year and a couple months and I just dont want to be some obnoxious teenager who doesnt know any theory haha. Right now I know:
Major and Minor Pentatonic
Major
Nautral Minor
Melodic minor
Harmonic Minor
I want to know what else is good to learn?
Answer: I’ve been playing guitar for about 3 1/2 years now, and in my opinion, the best scales are:
Blues Pentatonic
Phrygian Dominant
Melodic Minor
Lydian Minor
Locrian
Javaneese
Roumanian Minor
Moorish Phrygian
These scales will give a huge edge in your playing and theory if you use them right. Hope I helped.

Melodic Minor
Harmonic Minor
and the Pentatonics
In my opinion
Learn them all. They all will be helpful in making songs for your band or in general. I know how it is to have a guitarist and bassist who doesn’t know much, and trust me its not fun when they cant play.
Hello there,
I am of the school of thought that you need to know them all. Here is what Joe Satriani has to say about them.
