Now Then, Back in the 70's when You Went to See Some Guitar Based Band, 3/4 the Way Through the Set the Lead
A tough lead guitar question this week. Let’s dive straight in
Question: Guitarist would do some solo guitar work all on his own, now we knew that as free style, What do you kids of today call it???
P.S This is a good question!!
P.S This is a good question!!
Answer: I remember this so well from my 80’s rock concert days. The guitarist would just stand front and centre and riff away for 5 minutes (or more).
Looking at chart music today this seems like something that will be consigned to memory as all the songs appear to be going down the sample or jazzed up cover version. Fewer and fewer appear to be playing their own instruments.
I think that anything that shows expression is called freestyle and that this name will (or should) stay.
Ah, the memories. Good question!!!!

Ego masturbation. Self-indulgence. Above all, cheesey. Not to mention boring, tedious and a bit wank.
The guitar solo is dead, and you’re also hearing fewer and fewer songs with guitar solos in between the bridge and final verse.
