Is the Rhythm Guitar the Same As a Lead Guitar or is It Like a Different Guitar That You Have to Buy Separate?
What a great lead guitar question:
Question: Is the Rhythm Guitar the Same As a Lead Guitar or is It Like a Different Guitar That You Have to Buy Separate?
Answer: These are different ways of playing, not different types of guitar. Lead guitarists play melodies (the part of a song that is usually sung) while rhythm guitarists play chords in a rhythmic way to support the singer. Some guitars are better suited for playing lead or rhythm, but all guitars can do both perfectly fine.

Wow. Ok, rhythm guitar is just a manner of playing. Usually chords or arpeggiated chords that help make up the rhythm of a song. Lead guitar is simply a manner of playing where the guitar is prominent with its melody or a showcase of guitar work. For example, when a guitar does a… solo… and momentarily replaces another lead instrument or vocal part as the focus of the song. You can think of rhythm playing as more of a background spot and lead guitar as more upfront although its not always the case. Rhythm guitar can be very melodic and lead can lack a melody all together so its a slightly vague definition, assigning certain values that dont work in every situation. Some people refer to lead guitar as soloing but its not a very consistent definition. They arent always the same especially the rather indulgent history of "soloing" I could easily play lead as a form of rhythm playing. Lead guitar implies that youre actually taking the song somewhere. Soloing implies that youre just playing for your own gratification and that it doesn’t have much merit to the song. Just my two cents there.
Rhythm and lead guitar are not physical guitars that you buy they are simply ways of playing. There are particular guitars that have characteristics better suited for the traditional rhythm and lead rock roles, say rickenbacher guitars for rhythm and maybe les pauls for lead. One could do the exact opposite approach though. Theres no set book of rules here anyways. I think "rhythm" and "lead" guitar roles are stupid. Only people like Slash still think that way.
