Really, the most important thing is knowing if this is something you really want to do. It takes a lot of practice, and usually people interested in playing in the classical style get a teacher. You should check out Guitar for Dummies, it’s actually pretty good and may help you figure out what you want to do. (The All in One book)

No, they are not same. Major characteristic of fingerstyle is to use your right hand fingers to play melody and chords simultaneously. (like sungha jung, and yes he is great esp. for his age) This is almost similar to playing classical guitar except the term fingerstyle usually related to acoustic guitar.
In your case, since you both want to play fingerstyle acoustic and (epic) electric guitar solos I suggest you to get an electric guitar. The reason is you can both play solo and fingerstyle with electric guitar where as you won’t be able to play metal solos with acoustic guitar. Of course playing fingerstyle with an electric guitar won’t be same as playing acoustic but at least it is possible.
On the other hand, Starting guitar with an acoustic guitar might be much better since they are usually much more affordable than electric guitar, meets requirements of beginners such as playing chords and melodies and would provide you an experience and technique that will help you to play much better and comfortable when you switch to electric guitar.
Try to find a song that you like most, find it’s tab, and start practicing slowly and then go fast. the letters you see in tabs are chords. Each letter corresponds to a different chord where you can learn from here http://www.all-guitar-chords.com/
Other tabs includes numbers that shows you notes by indicating exact string and fret number. Both are really easy to learn, just spend some time with patience.
Good Luck
