I Started Playing Lead Guitar and My Fingers Hurt.?

This week’s question is as follows:

Question: I’ve been playing rythm guitar for almost 9 months, and now I’m starting to learn some solos. My fingers have been fine and haven’t hurt for a long time (except when I changed string brands) but now they hurt. Is it just because the 3 high strings are smaller or what?
Answer: no no this is natural ive been playing lead for 3 years and this always happened when i would solo. if you don’t have calluses then that’s probably the reason. and make sure when you find the strings you like stay on them. if you switch often your fingers wont get used to the different feel and size and the become aggravated

It just takes time to get use to playing. If they hurt. Stop playing. Over time you’ll develop callouses.

Sounds like you just need to develop your guitar chops. Once you get those callouses on your fingertips you should be good to go. You probably are hitting the strings on different parts of your fingers playing lead, so it will take a while to get your fingers in shape for that. Stop for a while if they get too sore, and go back to it a few hours later once they’ve stopped hurting.
