Answer: If you can afford it get some lessons . I’m self taught and have been playing for twenty years and I still haven’t mastered lead , to be fair once I mastered rhythm I stopped put as much effort in but an hour lesson could teach you things it might take you years to understand on your own .

You MUST take lessons, otherwise it will take you YEARS to even come close.
You don’t need lessons in my opinion. But, it does take a lot of self discipline and practice which can be done on your own if you are not easily discouraged.
You eventually get a feel for lead guitar playing once you"feel the music". When i first started playing lead all i did was go up and down the scale, but that has no character. You use different techniques like bending, vibrato to make it more interesting. To this day, im still no great lead player, its just not my thing personally. The different styles on lead playing is unbelievable.
What i can suggest is listen to A LOT of lead style music and try to learn what they do, and eventually you will come up with your own techniques and style. My favourite lead players are Joe Satriani, Paul Gilbert, David Gilmour and many more. just keep listening and practicing!!
The best way to learn to play lead guitar, once you’ve learned the major and minor scales in all 5 shapes, is to listen to as much music as you can and play along with it. Record some of your own rhythm tracks, use a drum machine, and jam along. You might play some stuff that sounds pretty bad at first, just keep practicing though and figure out what sounds good and what doesn’t. The only way to learn is by actually doing it.
There are some good books available at music stores that come with accompaniment tracks. Ask at a good store and see what they recommend.
Check out "lead guitar domination" it features amazing shredders like Rusty Cooley, Jeff Loomis and Oli Herbert.
but if you think shredding is boring, once you learn how to do it just learn as many shred or other lead guitar solos in songs that you do like…because it will be easy to do if you follow the video.
i must warn you this will take a $hit load of patience and practicing and an open mind…good luck
I’ve been playing guitar for 6 + years and have only taken lessons for about 2 maybe 3 of those years. I’ve only really started to play some lead, it’s mostly scales. You just have to find the root notes, for instance there are many ways to play an A chord. You can then switch from these positions on the fret board using the notes and going up and down on the scale playing it differently on the fretboard. It’s kind of hard to explain typing it. This lesson may be of some help.
