Guitar Skills Question, Lead Playing?

Well here’s a question I just had to answering straight away:

Question: so…i’m a shredder that can pull off 6-finger tapping, sweeps, and so on, but they won’t let me play in the praise band because i know very little about chords.well, trying out for lead playing, i was able to pick out all the lead parts, perfectly, by ear, but the worship leader didn’t like the fact that i didn’t use other voicings of the rhythm chords, even though i picked out some chords in the right key(without knowing "exactly" which chords i was playing).

This makes no sense to me, since I’ve even watched our church’s lead players play through the songs with no chords at all, only using scales and single-notes.
*and he, thus, won’t let me play in the band.
*i don’t have to shred, just simple melodies and some solos, and i barely have to use chords; i could honestly learn songs overnight, but he wants me to know the chords, not caring that i can play them.

Answer: Maybe the worship leader wasn’t looking for a ’shredder’. It’s great that you can do all that and play by ear.
My suggestion would be to learn even a little bit of theory and chording to help you get to where you want to be in the worship band. And also, I would talk to the leader and see what you could do to progress in this way and start playing for the band.

(Another thing, I find that if a musician’s spirit isn’t in the right place it will be very hard to lead people into God’s presence. But that’s really up to you and God to check your own heart.)

I hope everything works out.

First of all, if you want to learn how to play guitar fast then you need to learn how to play guitar slowly. Seems counter-intuitive? Yeah thatâ??s what I thought too. Iâ??ve been playing for years and all I do is to play guitar as fast as I could but I wasnâ??t making any fast progress at all. Then one day, my friend told me to just play it slowly. I practiced playing slowly and to my surprise, my guitar skills improved drastically!
